DIY

These pictures are from a while back but I know my at least one person (my mom!) wanted to see them.

A few months ago we undertook a few home improvement projects. Namely, we -- and when I say we I mean Todd and his brother Sean -- install new flooring on the entire main floor. And then we -- and this time I mean just me -- painted over the oak kitchen cabinets.

These are two projects I have been DYING to do since we moved into the house two and a half years ago. The carpet in the living room was so nasty. I think it was originally white but had been stained to a greyish-hue and there were some lovely stains by the previous owner's dog. In fact, the dog urine was so bad in some spots that it had stained the subfloor! Sick! We used odor-sealing primer to block it out before laying the new floating floor. Todd and Sean did an awesome job and we are so happy with the finished result. And pretty stoked that we saved thousand of dollars by doing it ourselves.

Not a perfect picture but good enough.

The second major project was the cabinets. They were in great shape, but I just don't love oak. We have a pretty open layout where you can see the kitchen cabinets from the living room and the staircase. And the oak just wasn't meshing. So I just went for it and I am sooooo happy that I did. We love the way it looks. It really opens up the kitchen and makes everything bright and cheery.

I also painted the oak edge on the countertops and everyone keeps asking if we got them replaced. In the beginning I wanted to eventually replace the appliances with stainless steel -- and maybe I will someday -- but for now I actually like that everything recedes.

Now that we have these tasks checked off the list, I am slowly doing some other things to spruce up. Next on the list: find a big old clock for the living room and figure out some sort of large-scale art for the empty wall in the living room. And do something over the bookcase, perhaps? Any ideas?

Wow! I was dying to see pictures, so I'm glad you put all these up. The cabinets - you definitely made the right choice. What a difference! I also like the new layout for the living room. Tell me if you come up with something for your big wall, because I have one of those to fill too. And where did you get the entertainment chest? You didn't have it before, did you? Nice work, Nat! I wish you were here to help me!

This is very, very tempting. Our cabinets are oak too, & the counter has the oak trim, which I really didn't think I could do anything about! (Your pantry looks like a near replica of ours too, though now much prettier of course) It looks great though - good work. I will add it to my dream makeover list!

It looks great Nat! I'm currently in the process of repainting a dresser I inherited. So fun! I also love the entertainment centre. I want one like that that will cover everything up. Looks amazing!!

I seriously can't believe the transformation everytime I go to your house! It suddenly looks like it's right out of a Pottery Barn catalogue. And it looks like Millie loves the new wood floors now that she can scoot around on her little walker. Great job, Nat (and Todd and Sean, too!).

These are huge projects! In my experience, even re-installing cabinet doors can make you work up a sweat. I'm very impressed!!!!
