He loves books with flaps or some other cool element. My mom always gets him the best books (like Usborne Books, so great), so whatever Grandma Aldridge gets him usually ends up a favorite. However, I have also seen him flip through magazines and stop from page to page. I wonder if he is examining the faces or dissecting the layout like his dad? Or seeking out typos like his mom?
It has been fun to see his love of books develop. When he goes down for a nap he likes to have one or two books in the crib with him. Perhaps that is what he is doing for four hours instead of napping? I never open the door to check; I say let well enough alone! When he wakes up, he often goes right to the chair in his room where he likes to sit and read. Sometimes he wants me to read to him; other times he prefers to go it solo.
Yesterday I took him out of his crib and he went straight for the chair. I tried to stay and snuggle with him but he got annoyed, so I went downstairs to do a few things. After about 15 minutes, I realized how quiet it was and I thought, uh-oh, he's into something. Imagine my surprise (and delight) when I went upstairs and found this:
I was so happy to see my little reader where I had left him. Everyone in my family loves to read, so it must be in his blood.*
*This calls for a little clarification. Growing up, us kids loved to read so much that there was a "no reading at the table" rule because no one wanted to put their book(s) down to eat dinner. We would fight over who got to read a book next. I remember constantly asking my sister Melody, are you done yet, are you done? so that I could read a book. In fact, there were several times when novels where hijacked mid-read because the guilty party simply couldn't wait their turn. I remember we drove my mom crazy because we would secretly stay up at night just to read. To this day, I carry a book in my purse just in case there is ever some downtime when I can read. Ahhh, good memories.

He is so cute. Happy reading!
natalie, i think you lived my childhood. "no reading at the table" was one of the most commonly uttered phrases at dinnertime in my house. and my sisters and i were always reading the same books as each other and waiting for our turn to read!
i would also like to clarify that in addition to the no reading at the table, there was also a "no singing" rule at the table. haha! I thought that was a well known rule until I said it to someone, and they were like "huh?!"
So, I guess just at the Aldridge house--no reading, no singing at the table!
I believe we had the no singing rule at our table too, but not because any of us were talented, just cuz we liked to sing. There were other various rules as well, but I can't remember any of the funny ones.
He looks so adorable there reading his books! What a cutie!
